Good copy is not an extra, it’s essential. Brands today need a relationship with their customers and your voice is the most important way you communicate. If they don’t trust your voice, they won’t trust you.
TONE OF VOICE
The secret ingredient of good business writing is tone of voice. The best brands know this by heart but far too many businesses talk in the wrong way – alienating customers as they do so. Tuning tone of voice is one of our key copywriting skills. Piers in particular has written in many different voices for different brands and audiences. This is branded writing.
It’s instant, the results are precisely measurable and the marginal costs are low. What makes email marketing truly effective is targeting. That’s targeting the content of the message, how it’s presented, and the tone that’s used. It’s something we’ve done a lot of.
You’ve got a tiny space and a couple of seconds to get your message across. You soon learn to be eye-catching and succinct. The key is boiling down the message to its essence (and that’s often a challenge for the client too).
PRINT BROCHURES AND LEAFLETS
People read print in particular ways and too many design agencies don’t know how to lead the reader’s eye through the page. You have to unfold a story that leads to a strong conclusion: the call to action.
People don’t read online, they scan. You’ve got less than 10 seconds to convince them to stay or they’ll move elsewhere. Be brief, get to the point, give them a link to find out more. That’s not all there is to a web copywriter’s work, but it’s the essential starting point. So is structuring your message well.
